Red Lentil (Masoor Dal) Tadka

This is a very tasty and healthy Indian main course dish. It is easy to prepare and packed with protein and fibre. A good option for kids too!

Ingredients

Red lentils, ½ cup
Water, 2 cups
Hot water, 1 cup
Turmeric powder, ½ tsp
Coconut oil, 3 tbs
Ghee, 1 tbs
Cumin seeds, ½ tsp
Whole red chili, 3 nos.
Curry leaves, a few
Onion (finely chopped), 1 no. or 150 g
Ginger (finely chopped). 1 tbs
Garlic (finely chopped), 3 cloves
Turmeric powder, ½ tsp
Kashmiri chili powder, 1 tsp
Coriander powder, ½ tsp
Chilli flakes. ½ tsp
Green chili (finely chopped), 1 no.
Tomato (finely chopped) 1 no. or 100 g
Coriander leaves (to garnish)
Salt, to taste
Note: I use organic masoor dal, which is tastier

Preparation:

  • Wash dal until the water runs clear and soak for 10 minutes.
  • Cook the dal in a saucepan along with two cups of water, 1/2 tsp turmeric and salt, on a low flame for around 20 minutes or until the water fully evaporates (the cover must be partially closed).
  • If you are using a pressure cooker, cook until two whistles blow. Set aside until the pressure releases.
  • Once fully cooked, add hot water and salt.
  • Heat for two minutes on a very low flame and set aside.
  • Heat oil and ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once the cumin pops, add curry leaves, red chili, and onion and sauté until the onion turns brownish.
  • Add ginger and garlic, sauté until fragrant.
  • Add spices and sauté for a few seconds.
  • Add green chili and tomato, and sauté until the oil separates.
  • Add coriander leaves and remove from fire; mix with cooked dal.
  • Transfer into a serving dish.
Enjoy with rice or chapati. Please comment and share :)
